AAC, or Augmentative and Alternative Communication, includes a range of tools and strategies—such as picture boards, sign language, and speech-generating devices—that support children who have difficulty using verbal speech. AAC can be used temporarily or long-term and does not prevent a child from developing spoken language; in many cases, it supports and enhances it.
If AAC may be beneficial for your child, a comprehensive assessment will be completed to determine their individual needs, strengths, and communication goals. Families are guided through each step of the process, including selecting appropriate tools and learning how to use AAC effectively at home and in daily routines.
